About the Community Espresso range:
Our coffee offering is very much about showcasing delicious in-season coffees whilst sharing the stories of their producers and their incredibly hard work and determination that goes into making it possible to enjoy them in our cups. Sitting nicely next to our trusty House Espresso mainstay from San Lorenzo, our Community Espresso brings in a bit variety and the coffees featured in this slot change 3 times per year.
Featuring coffee from 3 producing countries - Peru, Guatemala and Mexico, we aim to source these coffees from the same groups and communities year after year, whilst putting forward the great work that goes into producing coffee as part of a community within a certain region. Rooted in faith in cooperation, the key element linking all these collectives is the aim to improve livelihoods for their communities through quality coffee production whilst caring for the environment.
These lots are typically composed of coffees processed at each grower's own farms and consolidated together to market and sell under the group's or locality banner. The coffees contributed are the core of their growers' production and growers will often contribute a considerable portion of their harvest to these lots. Meaning they might not be the absolute highest scoring or the most exclusive but they do reliably meet physical and sensorial quality control and demonstrate distinctive regional flavour profiles. They also account for larger volumes of what we purchase for our offering. And as such they hold huge significance in terms of supporting livelihoods and returning value. As we always strive for our coffee buying to have a positive impact, valuing these coffees appropriately is incredibly important to maximise producers' profits and benefit wider communities.
Our community espresso celebrates the hard work of these producer groups whilst bringing you a flavour profile suited for consistently classy espresso based drinks – black and with milk. Expect a coating creamy body, milk chocolate and just the right amount of subtle fruit notes characteristic of the coffee’s origin to liven up the cup.
More about La Coipa lot and Finca Churupampa:

This lot is composed of coffees from a group of 15 producers based around La Coipa area in the San Ignacio province in Cajamarca, Northern Peru. As is common across Peru, growers here pick, process and dry their coffee themselves to sell in parchment for export. This group in La Coipa works closely with the team at Finca Churupampa - a progressive local farm and exporting company run by Eber Tocto and his brothers.
Alongside export services, Churupampa also provide technical assistance and other support with particular focus is on promoting organic farming practices and ensuring food security for coffee growers. With assistance from Churupampa, the group at La Coipa is currently taking part in a project seeking to establish their own compost plant.
And in the cup you can expect a deliciously comforting creamy milk chocolate with soft and sweet black grape-like fruit notes bringing a wonderful depth.
Finca Churupampa
We were first introduced to Finca Churupampa and their work last year by Thomas from Red Beetle - our export partner for Mexican coffee. With their strong commitment to sustainable quality coffee production rooted in a social approach involving and working for the betterment of the whole community resonated with us and our values. It was even more magical when we had the chance to cup their fresh crop pre-ship sample and the quality was truly exceptional. At that point we were happy to commit to purchasing this lot from La Coipa and we are beyond excited to share it with you now as part of our Community Espresso range. Though this is only the first year of us purchasing from this particular group, we are very hopeful and excited by the prospect of this being the beginning of a long-term buying partnership and us featuring their coffee as our Community Espresso from Peru in the years to come. Of course we remain committed to continual purchasing of the wonderful single farm lots from Peru from producers we’ve come to know and admire like Elvis Tineo, Efrain Cahualloclo and the Rioja Family, through our friends at Falcon Coffees Peru.
Originally a coffee farm, Finca Churupampa had been in the Tocto Bermeo family for some time, but it was when Eber Tocto and his brother took over in early 2010s that the the transformation began to what Churupampa is now - a social entreprise and a model for economically and environmentally sustainable coffee production in their region.
In their own words:
“At Finca Churupampa, through a social approach, we aim for integrated and sustainable development for coffee producers. Our goal is the purchase and sale of specialty coffees in both local and international markets. We work directly with our producer families and meticulously monitor harvest, post-harvest, and the management of slow, secure, and high-quality drying for export.”
“At Finca Churupampa, together with the incorporated families, we prioritize food security. To achieve this, we promote the cultivation of vegetables and the raising of small animals, which primarily improves the quality of life for families. Each year, we provide our producer families with an incentive for enhancing the quality of their product, enabling reinvestment in their farms and ensuring continual improvement for their families.”
